Questions fréquentes sur les aides sociales au Portugal

  • What is RSI and how much can I receive?

The Rendimento Social de Inserção (RSI) is Portugal's minimum income benefit, equivalent to France's RSA. A single adult can receive between €240 and €750/month depending on household composition and means-testing. It is administered by the Instituto da Segurança Social (ISS) and requires the applicant to be resident in Portugal, aged 18+, with income below the threshold.

You apply at your local Segurança Social office or online at seg-social.pt. The benefit includes an integration programme (inserção) requiring participation in employment or training activities.

  • How to apply for housing benefit in Portugal?

Portugal does not have a single national housing benefit. Instead, social housing (habitação social) is managed by municipalities. Income-based rental support (Porta 65) is available for young people aged 18–35 through IHRU (Instituto da Habitação e da Reabilitação Urbana). Apply at ihru.pt.

Some municipalities offer additional rent subsidies — check your local Câmara Municipal. EU citizens resident in Portugal are eligible. Applications are processed annually and subject to availability of funds.

  • What child benefits exist in Portugal?

The main child benefit is the Abono de Família, paid monthly per child under 16 (or 24 if in education). In 2026, amounts range from approximately €50 to €200 per child per month depending on household income bracket (1st to 5th echelon). It is paid by the Segurança Social and applies automatically when you register the birth.

Additionally, the Complemento para Crianças provides extra support for children in poverty. EU citizens with children resident in Portugal are entitled to apply for these benefits.
